Silent PC - building

Here’re the construction details of my silent PC made up of a VIA EPIA LN10000EG mainboard and a Silverstone LS12B case. As this isn’t a normal ATX case and motherboard, I took a few pictures of the case and mainboard as I was putting them together.

Stage 1 - The bits.

This is the case itself. Here you can see it with the top off. The silver piece on the top of the case is where you seat the hard and optical drives. To the left of the main case to can see the 60W power brick and the supplied PCB that allows you connect a slimline drive to a standard IDE and power supply.

This is the motherboard. The ‘back’ of the motherboard is facing you in this picture so that you can see the connectors on the back.

This is the motherboard mounted in the bottom of the case, you’ll notice that I’ve had to take the drive mounting board off first.

Here I’ve removed the firewire connector from from the front of the case and I’ve connected up the front panel audio connections and the front USB connections. I’ve also connected up the power supply.

This is the same as above, but showing the hard disk mounted. In this picture, the board is upside down, when assembled, the hard drive hangs underneath the mounting board. I can’t remember what the drive is, it was a random old one I had lying around.

This is the completed project, although with the case still off. You can see the hard drive mounted cross-ways beneath and the slimline optical drive on the top, connected via the PCB. One thing to note, as you can see there’s not much space between the hard drive and the side of the case. I’d really recommend getting a SATA cables with a 90 degree connector, like this one from Maplin
