Silent PC
Silent PC
I wanted to build myself a small home server, something to act as a file server, local DNS and DHCP server that sort of thing. I had an old PC lying around that I tried, but I found the noise of the fan disturbing at night so I wanted to build something quiet. I wanted a box that I could leave on all the time, so low power consumption was a bonus.
To solve the problem, I built a PC based around a Via EPIA LN10000EG mainboard that I bought from ITX warehouse: http://www.itx-warehouse.co.uk with 1GB of memory that I picked up from Dabs.
To house this board, I bought a Siverstone LC12B case from LinITX: http://linitx.com That way I’ve got a fanless motherboard sitting in a fanless case. The only moving component in this PC is the hard drive! In the future I’ll invest in a solid-state disk, but for now they’re just a bit too expensive.
I ordered these bits at the same time and they both arrived together the next day (they were both sent by City Link courier.) While there was nothing wrong with the case, so I can’t comment on the returns policy of LinITX, but there was a problem with the mainboard. Despite several emails to their customer support line, it took more than a month and a letter sent on the suggestion of consumer direct before they responded to by request for a replacement. They did however eventually send me a replacement and it worked perfectly.
